Frequently asked questions
How long does the Portuguese nationality process take?
Timelines vary. For naturalization (residency), the IRN has up to 18 legal months to respond — but many processes take longer. By ancestry, the timeline is 4 to 8 months. There are legal strategies to accelerate when legal deadlines are exceeded.
Do I need to travel to Portugal to resolve my process?
In most cases, no. We work 100% remotely: digital signatures, power of attorney, and documentation by mail or secure platforms. You will only need to appear in person if there is a specific requirement from the competent authority — and we advise you in advance.
What is the difference between recognition of judgment and marriage transcription?
Recognition of judgment (exequatur) validates a foreign judicial decision — such as a divorce — before Portugal's Supreme Court of Justice. Marriage transcription registers a marriage celebrated abroad in the Portuguese Civil Registry records. These are distinct procedures with different purposes.
What can I do to speed up my nationality process?
There are administrative and judicial pathways. Administratively: ensure impeccable documentation and active monitoring of deadlines. Judicially: when the legal deadline is exceeded, it is possible to file an action to compel the agency to respond. Each case is analyzed individually.
How does an action against AIMA work?
AIMA can be challenged when it issues decisions refusing residence permits, canceling visas, or rejecting applications without adequate grounds. We file a contentious appeal in the administrative court and, in urgent cases, request an injunction to suspend the decision while the case proceeds.
Can I track the progress of my process?
Yes. We maintain active communication by email and WhatsApp at all relevant stages. You don't need to chase information — we proactively notify you of every development in your process.
